Karnataka bans iron ore export from its ports

July 27, 2010: Karnataka has banned export of iron ore from the 10 ports in the State. This would effective from Monday. Announcing the decision, the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, said, "The State has stopped issue of permits for movement of iron ore in the State except for captive purpose." These minor ports include Karwar, Old Mangalore, and Belikeri. Last week, Mr Yeddyurappa had said that the only way to curb illegal mining was to prevent exports. After the National Development Council meeting in Delhi, the Chief Minister stated that his Government's view on banning exports of natural resources and focus on value addition has found support from chief ministers of other mineral rich States.
